On a rainy Tuesday afternoon after hiking the stairs from the parking lot to the gym, the JV Cougar Boys moved to 3-1 in PAL competition beating El Camino handily (in the end) 52-31. The young Cougars, bolted to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter riding the red-hot shooting of Owen Wooliever who made all of his five shots including three 3-pointers. Reversing a lack of long-distance success for much of the season, HMB made a total of 6 treys for the game with Zeke Syme, Kai Guevara, and Brayden Campbell all making a 3-pointer. Following the hot start, the Cougars let the Colts back into the game finishing the 2nd quarter up 24-17.
After the halftime break, the Cougars fell back into their strength of great team defense to limit the Colts to 7 points in each of next two quarters, while scoring 28 second half points. In the 3rd, the strong defense led to several fast break layups or subsequent fouls. After a good first half of rebounding, Noah Hill and Nohea Sharp continued clearing the boards and Sharp also chipped in 4 points in the 3rd on a fast-break short jumper and layup to extend the Cougar lead. Cougar scoring was well distributed with Wooliever leading all scorers with 18 points along with 5 assists, and Syme hitting free throws and two buckets to total 9 points. Of note, nine different Cougars scored including scoring from Roman Nadeau, Campbell, Connor Quisog, Hill, Guevara, Sharp, and Luke Longaker.
The young Cougar Boys continue the PAL schedule Friday as part of the Quad at Terra Nova and go into the weekend among the top of their league with just one loss.
