HALF MOON BAY FALLS TO SEQUOIA IN PAL SEMI FINAL

This P.A.L. semi final game was a battle of its big men.  The top player in the North, 6-7 Ethan Menzies faced up against the top player in the South, 6-6 1/2 Ziggy Lauese.  The teams fought evenly through the first two quarters with a Cherokee basket at the buzzer giving the Redwood City team a 2 point lead at the half.  The Cougars responded with a strong 3rd quarter, taking an 8 point lead into the final frame.  While both big men had collected 4 fouls by the midway point of the fourth quarter, a second offensive foul call against Menzies gave him his 5th with the score tied and 2:41 left.  This call proved to be the decisive moment of the game.  The Cougar's whose 2nd half defensive adjustment had been to double Lauese low while Menzies was not on the court, and in doing so contained him to 3 second half points, eventually were made to pay by the resultant open Cherokee.  Jean Ayarza,  who had been 0-6 from the field until this point, was able to get good looks from mid range, knocking down his last three field goal attempts.  This gave Sequoia the lead, which together with 1 and 1 foul shots in the final minute led to its final margin of victory.  Menzies led scoring for HMB with 13; Lauese  for Sequoia with 16.  Sequoia advances to the P.A.L. finals Saturday night -vs- Jefferson in a 7:45 tip off from the Event Center.
