Boys Varsity Basketball fades in final minutes. Loses to Carlmont 58-52

The Cougars opened with perhaps their finest half of basketball this year. They took a 16 point halftime lead against the heavily favored Scots. HMB stifled the Carlmont attack with intensity and pressure, both holding its perimeter game to 1 for 12 shooting, its 6'8" big man to 2 first half points and its overall shooting to 30%. It matched this defensive prowess with offensive efficiency, hitting 64% of Cougar shots. It also matched play for the first six minutes of the third quarter, holding a 42-26 lead with 10 minutes left in the contest. And then things fell apart. The Scots threes began to drop. It increased its offensive rebounds from three in the first half to ten in the second. Our turnovers went from four in the first half to nine in the second. We became the team which shot 30% in a half. The resultant 19-3 fourth quarter run by Carlmont led to its six point margin of victory. Ben McKnight led all scorers with 18 on 6 for 13 shooting. LaJuan Nelson led the Scots with 14 including 10 during Carlmont's second half run. The Cougars return to action on December 26th in the Aptos/Warriors Tournament.
