The Cougars defeated the Gunderson Grizzlies last night in a tough grind out game 47-34.
The game was a defensive struggle for both teams as both teams had to work very hard to get up quality shots. After one quarter the score was tied @ 6. The 2nd quarter resulted in a few more scoring opportunities for both teams as the Cougars took a 21-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
At the end of 3 quarters, the Cougars held a slim 1 point lead at 29-28 with big man Case DuFrane saddled to the bench in foul trouble with 4 personals.
The Cougars finally managed to get some easier buckets against the 2-3 Grizzly zone with some nice high looks looks for Case DuFrane who scored 6 of his 10 points in the 4th quarter. Tommy Nuno also came alive offensively in the 4th quarter, scoring 8 points in the final frame on a nice finish at the rim and knocking down 5/6 free throws. The Cougar defense really locked down any offensive opportunities for the Grizzlies as they could only mange 6 points in the decisive final quarter.
Austin Hilton finished with 11 points despite 4/13 shooting. Case DuFrane and Tommy Nuno each scored 10 points and Jake Salinero contributed 7.
This year marks the 4th year in a row the Cougars have captured the championship crown, which is a tourney record.
Austin Hilton was named tournament MVP after scoring 19, 17 and 11 points in the 3 games, while hauling down 7, 12 and 8 rebounds.
Tommy Nuno and Case DuFrane were also named to the All-tourney team.
Next up for the Cougars (3-0) is Irvington HS of Fremont this Tuesday at the 38th annual Lions' Club tourney @ Burlingame HS.
