The Cougars won their first game down in the Monterey Peninsula defeating the previous unbeaten Pacific Grove Breakers, which marks the second game in a row the Cougars have defeated an unbeaten foe (last game defeating Menlo School). The game was tight through the first half as the Cougars went into the halftime locker room with only a 28-24 lead. But, the Cougars defense continued to force Pacific Grove to work hard for many of their shots, including giving up 2 banked threes and the offense really started to heat up with the Cougars scoring 18 points in the 3rd quarter to take a 46-35 lead. The offense continued to roll in the 4th quarter extending the lead to as much as 20 points. Final score Cougars 65, the Breakers 48.
Very impressed with how hard Pacific Grove played to the end and they have some very good younger players to watch out for in the future. Junior Chip Wagner led the Breakers with 14 points, including 4 3-pointers. Their very talented PG Brad Sendell was held to only 4 points. Sendell had been averaging 19 points a game. Credit goes to Tommy Nuno for shutting down the talented sophomore. The Breakers are well-coached and with 3 players missing from their rotation, will only get better as the season progresses.
The BIG 3 (Austin Hilton, Case DuFrane and Tommy Nuno) for the Cougars were great tonight, with Case leading the way with 19 points and 8 rebounds, Austin had a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tommy scored 16 points and played very well on the defensive end.
Next up for the Cougars are the Carmel Padres, who lost to Menlo-Atherton tonight 45-36.
Tip off is 6p tomorrow night, preceded by the JV squad who won tonight as well.
